2009 Fashion Short Courses – South Australia

TafeSA are offering a number of short courses related to fashion, dressmaking, lingerie and costume making between January and July 2009. Areas covered include corset making, pattern drafting, alterations, millinery and bra making, among others.

Basic Evening Bodice/Corset
Learn how to make a structured evening bodice (either with straps or strapless) using stays, and optional lacing at the back. The design will take you from day to evening wear and is also suitable for weddings and costumes.

Costume Making
Covers many different areas of costume making. Emphasis is on leotards and a variety of dance and gymnastic wear. You will learn professional techniques involved in constructing dance clothing. Sequining and beading of costumes will also be taught. If required, you could also learn how to make head pieces.

Pattern Drafting
Are you experienced in dressmaking using commercial patterns but have trouble with the fit? Learn from the professionals the fundamental skills of pattern making including block construction, dart manipulation and design lines.

Dressmaking

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced dressmaker, this diverse course has something for you. You can learn both basic and advanced skills of sewing, fitting and finishing and develop a sound knowledge at your own pace.

Introduction to Bra Making

Learn the basics of bra making, correct measuring techniques, pattern drafting and construction and complete a standard underwire bra in size 10B. Skills are transferable so you will be able to construct a bra or moulded cup into swimsuits and dresses. Information will be provided on where to source the components. You will need to provide some basic equipment – a list will be provided on enrollment.

Manipulation of Fabrics for Contemporary Fashion
Gather, stitch, pleat, scrunch and fold modest textiles to create new and intricate 3D fabrics that fuse art with fashion. Develop basic techniques to create samples that inspire and push your perception of wearable art.

You will need to provide some basic equipment – a list will be provided on enrollment.

The main focus of this course is the many different styles of hemming. You will learn how to hem trousers, jeans, casual pants, dresses, skirts and jacket sleeves and how to restructure garments.

    Just FYI – there is also a Steel-boned Corsetry course being run at the Marleston TafeSA in April; it was unfortunately omitted from the short course guide.

  2. Hello, this is Jennifer, I teach the bra making, evening bodice and corset and swimwear class at Modbury TAFE and the day bra classes at TAFE city. There is a bodice class again this term, but I just wanted to let you know the 2011 course dates are being set at the moment. We have so much fun in these classes if anyone is interested in coming along I would love to see you there.

  3. Perth does have stuff like this, check out the Central Institute of Technology. They run short courses very similar to these shown here (pattern making, lingerie, corsetry etc). I’m doing a course there now!
